MADRID — Atletico Madrid have reportedly offered €20 million (RM90 million) for Santos striker Gabriel Barbosa, who is known as Gabigol or Gabriel.
The 19-year-old’s agent Wagner Ribeiro revealed to UOL that the figure put on the table by Atletico matches that of Juventus after the Italian giants tried to lure him to Serie A.
Santos insists they know nothing of any formal offer, although they acknowledge talks have taken place with Atletico regarding future projects.
However, Ribeiro says any decision regarding the player will not be made until after his participation in the Rio Olympics.
One stumbling block could be Barcelona are believed to have first refusal on the player, as stipulated in the contract signed when they brought Neymar to Nou Camp.
Meanwhile, Atletico announced defensive prospect Lucas Hernandez has extended his contract until 2020.
The development sees Lucas’ contract furthered by a year and his release clause increased from €25 million (RM112 million), amidst reported interest in the centreback from Manchester City.
“I’m very happy to stay at the club of my life,” he told Atletico’s website upon the signing of his renewal.
The 20-year-old was drafted into the first team last season following the various absences of Stefan Savic, Jose Maria Gimenez and Diego Godin and went on to play 16 games, including both legs of Los
Colchoneros’ Champions League quarterfinal against Barca.
He also demonstrated his versatility by replacing injured leftback Filipe Luis during the Champions League final against Real Madrid.
Lucas, a France Under-20 international, follows in the footsteps of his younger brother Theo, who recently penned a new deal before joining Alaves on loan.
