MALAYSIA are capable of winning more than the targeted seven gold medals, Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) president Datuk Seri Norza Zakaria said.
Norza believes, based on the preparation of the athletes, a return of seven gold would be fairly modest.
“As Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said, the contingent has the potential to win 11 gold,” Norza told reporters at the flaghanding ceremony yesterday.
“Let’s leave it to the athletes. They’ve been working hard to do well at the Games.”
Chef-de-mission Datuk Seri Azim Zabidi is confident the target can be achieved.
“We’ve looked at all the athletes and judged their performances for the last six months before setting the target,” he told reporters.
National Sports Council director-general Datuk Shapawi Ismail added to finish among the top 10, Malaysia would need to win between nine to 11 gold.
“We’re confident of meeting our target,” he said.
“But based on recent performances, 11 is achievable if everything goes well.”
