PETALING JAYA — A security guard who allegedly confessed to police that he killed his ‘‘girlfriend’’ last week was charged with murder at a magistrate’s court here yesterday.
The accused, M. Gunasegaran, 37, was charged with murdering D. Tharani, 35, at the parking lot of the Giant Hypermarket in Kota Damansara on Feb 5 at 1.50pm.
The charge carries the death sentence upon conviction.
Magistrate Nor Ariffin Hisham presided over the case while Deputy Public Prosecutor Fazeedah Faik led the prosecution.
The proceedings were observed by lawyer M. Manoharan, who held a watching brief after being engaged by the victim’s family.
The accused arrived in court at about 11am and no plea was recorded.
Nor Ariffin set April 13 for case mention pending the submission of reports related to the investigation.
The accused will remain in Sungai Buloh Prison while awaiting trial.
Tharani’s father, M. Devarajoo, 67, and her elder sister Gunawathi, 39, were also present in court.
On Feb 5, Gunasegaran reportedly drove to the Damansara police station in Tharani’s car with her body slumped in the front seat. He confessed to killing his ‘‘girlfriend’’ and was arrested.
Police also recovered a knife from inside the car.
It is understood the accused had known the victim three months prior to the incident.
She had been employed as a clerk at a condominium management office in Kota Damansara where he also worked.
Tharani’s family has denied the accused had any relationship with her.
