With Christmas just around the corner, the oldest church in South East Asia will be celebrating its bicentenary anniversary in 2019 by carrying out several activities to benefit the poor and the underprivileged.

The St. George’s Church Penang is a 19th century Anglican church located in the heart of the World Heritage Zone and come Dec 25, the church hopes to give a helping hand to homeless people and those in need with the best of gifts — food.

They also hope to bring cheer to disadvantaged children in the process. “Last year, the church folks gathered over 160 children and presented them with food and gifts. A lot of fun was had too,” said St George’s Church spokesperson, Jeya Samson.

“Once again, ourTree of Love has been decorated and gifts have been collected for the children. This time around we are hoping to have 200 kids over to celebrate Christmas,” she stated, adding that the children’s party will be held on Dec 16. Volunteers are welcome to help out in the run-up to the Christmas celebrations.

A Christmas tree, measuring around 3.6 metres, have been decorated by members of the church recently with every petal or flower cut out by hand by their members. “It was a joint effort as volunteers from all walks of life spent their time to decorate the tree with all the colourful items.

“Members of the public are also urged to pick a card from the tree to write an inspiring message to a child and drop a donation to buy gifts for them,” continued Samson.

The historic church recently hosted British royal, HRH Prince Charles who was on an official trip to the island with his wife, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall.

The royal entourage was greeted by St George’s Church Penang’s Bishop, Charles Samuel before they were taken around the church which was declared a national heritage in 2007.

Charles and Camilla were also presented with an oil painting in conjunction with the church’s bicentenary celebration.

Members of the public wanting to donate for the worthy cause can make their donations to St. Georges Church Bicentenary HLB account no 022 00 32425 4 or contact the church office at 04-2612739 (Ms Ooi).
