THE Asia Pacific CSR Council & JCI Achiever, in support of The United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) held the 5th Asia Pacific CSR Forum in Kuala Lumpur in September.

The aim of the conference was to discuss matters of importance of social responsibility in business, good governance and sustainability in business, and how all of these can contribute to a better world in line with the UNGC goals and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Along with the forum, there was an awards programme held to recognise and honour corporations that have executed highly successful and impactful corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities within or outside their boundaries. The forum and awards programme are supported by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC).

The UNGC and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), conceptualised by the UN Foundation, is a strategic policy initiative for businesses that are committed to aligning their operations and strategies with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption.

The organisers found a common mission statement in CSR and UN Global Compact — to empower young people to create positive change.

“By providing an opportunity for companies to showcase their social performance, we are supporting the UNGC and Millennium Development Goal, and its goals to embed markets and societies with universal principles and values for the benefit of all,” it said a media release.

The Asia Pacific Awards programme recognises organisations for embodying the principles of corporate responsibility in their business philosophy and operations following the principles of UNGC.

Awards are given for programmes that achieve excellence in terms of services to stakeholders and innovative sustainable solutions to pressing social challenges.

Awardees should demonstrate the company’s leadership, sincerity and on-going commitment to incorporating ethical values (anti-corruption), compliance with legal requirements (labour standards), respect for individuals (human rights), involvement in communities and protection of the environment into the way they do business.

The awards took place at The Grand Ballroom, The Event Place @ One City, Subang and was graced by Tengku Muhaini Sultan Ahmad Shah as the royal patron of the awards and Deputy Education Minister Datuk P. Kamalanathan as the guest of honour.
